When SkyVector is the right tool
You want a free chart viewer in a browser tab to eyeball a route, look up an unfamiliar airport, or sketch a flight plan you'll file elsewhere. SkyVector has been the pilot community's free go-to for over a decade and it earns that reputation. What it isn't: a complete planning workflow. You'll still bounce between aviationweather.gov for METARs, FAA NOTAM search, a separate fuel calculator, and your own runway/wind math.
When ForeFlight is worth the price
You fly often, you fly IFR, and you want a true Electronic Flight Bag that follows you from the desk to the cockpit yoke mount. ForeFlight's depth — geo-referenced approach plates, synthetic vision, ADS-B integration, profile view, full route filing — is genuinely best in class. The cost is real money and a real learning curve, and most of it lives best on an iPad.
When AeroPrep Pro fits
You're a private pilot flying VFR cross-countries in a Cessna 172, Cherokee, DA40, or similar. You don't need a $25/month EFB to fly the $100 hamburger run on Saturday — you need a fast desktop dashboard that pulls weather, picks the right runway, checks your fuel reserves, and prints a tidy briefing in five minutes.
